FAQ's

What does “Mobilap” mean?

Mobil = Mobile      => Portable
Ap = Apparatus      => Machine

What is the difference between the Mobilap Glass and Pro?

Information about the models can be found here.

Are there different models for the longtrack and the shortrack machine?

No! Both models (Glass and Pro) can now handle shorttrack as well as longtrack blades.

Are there blade length or shoe size limitations?

The machine can handle a sharpening length of up to 444 mm. There are no restrictions to blade-length and shoe-size. If you want to grind swedish speed skates ("zweedse klunschaatsen"), please contact us.

How accurate is the machine?

High accuracy is reached by placing the blade right above the template. Therefore, the distances that have to be spanned are small and hence the deformations are small. The preccision templates are made of stress free cast aluminium.

Does the stone affect the rocker?

The grinding stone does not affect the accuracy of the radius. The type of stone determines only the roughness of the sharpened surface, not the rocker. For a smooth surface a relative soft stone is choosen. The consequence is a little bit more wear of the stone.

What is the working life of the stone?

With one stone you can grind about 400 blades.

What are the radii of the standard templates?

See the page about templates for more information.

Are templates with variable radii possible?

Yes, they are possible. See the page about templates for more information.

What is the working life of the Mobilap?

The machine has a simple design and is very durable. Perhaps sometimes a bearing has to be replaced. It is advisable to regulary remove dust and grindings from the template.

What does the machine weight?

A full funcional machine weights 10 kg.

Is grinding of the blade difficult?

Grinding of the rocker is easier than sharpening of the blade. For safety reasons it is important to follow the instructions in the manual.

How can I maintain the rocker in my blades?

With the Mobilap rocker machine you can very accurately position the blade with respect to the template and a minimal amount of material is removed from the blade. This makes frequently grinding possible. Another way for maintaining the rocker in the blade is by measuring and correcting the rocker by hand during each sharpening session, but this procedure requirs craftmanship.

What is the delivery time?

The Mobilap rocker machine and standard templates will be delivered from stock. Special templates take about 2 months.
